The American Society on Aging (ASA) has awarded the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging (NAPCA) two leadership awards at ASA’s 2018 Aging in America Conference: the Gloria Cavanaugh Award for Excellence in Training and Education and the Award for Excellence in Multicultural Aging.
NAPCA’s National Resource Center on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Aging is the recipient of the Gloria Cavanaugh Award for Excellence in Training and Education for our demonstrated and continued excellence in training and education in the field of aging. Funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, the National Resource Center on AAPI Aging has been paramount in building the capacity of professionals and systems to become culturally competent and linguistically appropriate in issues areas such as dementia, long-term services and supports, elder justice, and family caregiving.
NAPCA’s Healthy Eating Healthy Aging program is the recipient of the Award for Excellence in Multicultural Aging for demonstrating high-quality, innovative programming that enhances the lives of a multicultural aging population. Funded by a grant from the Walmart Foundation and adapting an evidence-based intervention by the American Heart Association, NAPCA partnered with 19 AAPI-focused community-based organizations in 16 cities to educate limited English speaking AAPI seniors on healthy eating, heart health, and nutrition label reading in seven AAPI languages. As a result, participants ate more servings of fruits and vegetables, increased their awareness of sodium intake, and learned to read nutrition labels.
“We are grateful to be the recipient of these prestigious awards, and we are humbled and honored to be recognized for our efforts. We are especially thankful for our amazing partners and collaborators, because together, we were able to make a positive impact in the lives of AAPI older adults across the nation,” says Dr. Wes Lum, NAPCA President and CEO.
