NAPCA President & CEO Joon Bang’s Statement
“For the millions of older Americans who rely on the Affordable Care Act, the judgment is welcome news. This case was about equitable access to healthcare and medicine for millions of underprivileged and underserved older adults. The ACA ensures they will continue to have access to expanded benefits through Medicare, lower prescription costs, fraud prevention, and quality care. Most Americans over the age of 65 suffer from at least one chronic condition. Exorbitant out-of-pocket medical costs contribute to the increase in poverty rates among our aging population. With 7.5 million Americans over the age of 65 currently living near or below the poverty line, repeal of the law would have been devastating to our country’s older adults. NAPCA is relieved by the Supreme Court’s decision, but the Affordable Care Act is not enough. We look forward to the President and Congress beginning the work of addressing the high cost of quality healthcare that still remains.”
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Health Statistics, consumers age 65 and above paid on average $6,833 in out-of-pocket health care expenditures in 2019, an increase of 41% since 2009 ($4,846). With the costs of healthcare becoming insurmountable, NAPCA is advocating for additional support to expand programs like Social Security, Medicare, and introduce new ones that address health equity. NAPCA will continue to collaborate with the Biden administration to improve the economic, public health and wellness conditions of our diverse elder community.
